The Road to my Future Career

The future always seems so far away, but it ends up flashing before your eyes very quickly. As much as I like thinking about the present, I also like to plan and hope for the best in my future. When I first started this program, I would have never imagined being in my final year this quickly. In 5-10 years, I hope to have a stable job, whether that be working for a corporation, freelancing, or for a small company. The only thing that matters to me is that I enjoy where I end up working. I aspire to be an illustrator, whether it’s for dust jackets, promotional flyers, packaging, or apparel. The possibilities are endless, and I am open to working on anything that will let me pursue my passion.

Before entering Graphic and Web Design, I wanted to be an illustrator, and I am so grateful that this field allows me to incorporate illustration into most of the work that I do. I would love to have a job where I can grow as a person and have some space to put my creative input. Although things change all the time, I am quite optimistic that I will have a job I appreciate.

I really enjoy working on print material, specifically illustration-based work. I have always had a passion for drawing, and this passion carries through into my illustrations. An example is this soda can I made for my packaging class. I wanted the illustration to be simplistic but also able to flow well with the rest of the design. My illustrations tend to be more on the flat vector-based style, but I also love trying out different styles and broadening my artistic abilities. Challenging myself with new techniques is always something I appreciate since I can learn new things along the way.

My Short-Term Goals

After finishing this program, my main goal is to start working full-time in the graphic and web design field. I’m looking for a stage that will challenge and help me improve as a designer.  Being a student is completely different from working at a job full-time, and I’m really looking forward to experiencing what it’s like to work in the field. These  new experiences will help me grow as a designer and gain new experiences that I might not have been able to experience before.

Following the completion of my three week stage, I’ll be ready to work full-time. I have worked full-time in the past, so I am familiar with the 8-5 workday. To make things more convenient for myself, I will be planning to move closer to Montreal. Currently, I live off-island, and being closer to the city will give me better access to different areas and opportunities.

I am very excited to begin this new phase in my life. For the past five years, I’ve been working part-time and full-time at Maxi and Cie. I will be able to apply the skills I learnt from my current job, such as team-work and punctuality. I am very hard working at my current job and I am hoping to transfer this ethic to any new jobs that I get.  I am looking forward  to starting a job in my field and putting into practice all the skills I’ve learnt during my years in this program. I am very creative and I hope to apply this skill within the job that I will be working for. Creativity has always been a strong point for me and it is something that I appreciate within the graphic and web design field.

I am looking forward to all the opportunities that will arise and I hope to learn a lot from them.

Vernissage

The Vernissage will take place from 5:00pm-7:00pm on Wednesday April 10th. The Graphic and Web Design students will be showcasing their work they’ve done for the past three years. I can’t wait to be able to showcase my work to everyone along with my peers. Some examples of work I will be showcasing are business cards, posters, infographics and illustration. Everyone will be having all different types of work they will be showcasing.
Anyone is welcome to come to this event! There will be snacks and beverages for everyone. It will also be a great opportunity to speak with other designers and learn about how they created their work. This will be our final big event before we go on our stages.

On a more personal note, I am very grateful for everything I’ve learnt over the years and for all my teachers that have helped me with all the work I’ve done. I have evolved as a designer over the past few years and have learnt so many new skills that will help me with my future employment. I have also developed my own style which I incorporate into most of my work. I am also happy that the program has prepared me to be able to work with a multitude of programs and techniques. I am able to work with a variety of styles and to adapt to different types of work. I am also very excited to begin my stage and to have new opportunities in my field.
